Buckland crashed out of the FA cup after a disappointing result against a Bournemouth side who reached the First round for the second time one their history. Bucks, who were hoping to match their best ever performance in the cup, started on the back foot, as A Bournemouth player sprung an early offside trap, forcing a good reaction save from keeper Abbi Bond, the rebound was subsequently fired against the bar before another chance was hooked off the line by a Bucks defender.
The returning Courtney Butt was then fouled 35 yards from goal, but Alex Hugh’s free kick sailed over the bar. Then, the Devon side looked to press home their superior league standing, Sarah Smith, playing a more advanced role, linked up well with Sarah Stacey up front however it was well defended by the Cherries back line.
On 20 minutes, Bonds goal was again leading a charmed life, as the woodwork was rattled again by a fierce strike, before Bond pulled off another fine save minutes later. On 36 minutes, Bournemouth took a deserved lead as Bond was soundly beaten from distance by a fine strike into the top corner. 6 minutes later, the lead was doubled after Bond pulled off a fine reaction save, only for the advancing red attacker to slot home.
At HT, a mountain to climb for the Yellows.
Half time - AFC Bournemouth 2-0 Buckland Athletic
The 2nd half started brightly, with what seemed a clear penalty denied as Stacey was felled in the box, but the man in the middle deemed a fair tackle, much to the coaches bemusement on the touch line, before another fine reaction save from bond started an impromptu counter attack, however Abi Meyer, another player returning from a spell on the sideline, could only find the Bournemouth shot stoppers gloves with her cross. Carmen Morison was replaced by Natalie Warman shortly afterwards, who instantly looked to press the Dorset outfits back line, winning the ball back & creating a good opportunity for Maria Warman, however her effort was blocked. Butt then had a header saved from a free kick, before Bournemouth twice more rattled Bonds woodwork. On 65 minutes, Mollie Taylor was dragged down on the edge of her own box, but to her sheer disbelief, play was allowed to continue and the ball was fired home to give Bournemouth a commanding lead.
N. Warman looked impressive when she came off the bench, showing the sort of passion & self belief Bucks lacked at times in the first half, she played a big part in the penalty the ref finally awarded, as good pressure forced a mistake from the fullback before a good cross saw Meyer fouled in the box. Stacey converted the penalty emphatically, but it just wasn’t to be as Bournemouth claimed their second National league scalp of the season.
